Poems are means of putting across beautiful thoughts in a manner that is dramatic and interesting to read and hear. Poetry as a form of art has existed since ages to aesthetically use language in addition to or in lieu of its evident connotation. Over the years, many famous poets have developed different styles of poetry which have become significant as a signature style of each of them which was framed by a unique use of language, rhythm and other elements of the art form.
Aristotle, who was a Greek philosopher, who had an amazing knowledge on various subjects including physics is acknowledged worldwide for his work on poetry. His poems were majorly based on comedy and tragedy. He had an immense capability of defining the characters in the poem and building up the plot to caste a spell on the listener. His is one of the earliest works on poetry. Another poet who has his origin from Greek and has been applauded for his magnificent work is Homer who was traditionally the author of epic poems, popular ones being Iliad and the Odyssey. According to Aristotle, Homer was a unique poet of his times as his work centered about a single unified theme in the epic cycle. When one talks of the romantic era, an obvious name that comes about is that of Aleksandr Pushkin who was a Russian author and is considered the most famous Russian poet. He created his own style of story telling through poems combining drama, romance and satire. One of his famous works is Mary: A Story of Russian Love that throws light on Russia during the time of Catherine the Great. It is impossible to miss out William Shakespeare, the great English poet when you are talking about poetry and drama. He is often called national poet of England for the remarkable work he had executed during his time. His initial work focused on comedy and history. He then wrote tragedies such as Hamlet, King Lear, and Macbeth which are considered one of his finest works as a poet and dramatist. His sonnets which were short, rhythmic poems became very popular. The accounts of the famous poets across the world are limitless as there have been many great poets such as Du Fu, Dylan Thomas, W. H. Auden and Elizabeth Bishop who have made enormous contributions to the world of poetry and have always been remembered by the distinctive style they have given to their form of poems. |
